WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SHAWLANDS?

MY SHAWLANDS ART TRAIL

We are delighted to announce the Shawlands Art Trail, a project that we have been working on for more than a year,  kicks off this weekend. Our ambitious plans will bring graffiti artists, illustrators, ceramicists, sculptors and designers from around the local area to add art and colour to the blank spaces of Shawlands over three phases. Projects range from small street level pieces up to large gable ends, all done with cooperation from building owners, tenants, Glasgow City Council as well as the artists that will be assigned each space.

This weekend we will be welcoming 11 artists to begin work on the first phase, this is a major project that will create around 35 separate works of art to compliment existing artwork in the area such as at Park Lane and in the lane beside Jodandy’s. The entire project will take months to complete but we’re very excited that phase one is now underway.

Each artist has been selected based on their individual style, including emerging artists to those with international acclaim. We hope to ensure that the Shawlands Art Trail represents many cultures and perspectives while creating a collection of art that will resonate far and wide and so bring visitors to the area to enjoy for years to come.

The Shawlands Art Trial is being organised by My Shawlands, a Business Improvement District which is funded by the businesses of Shawlands and managed by a board of Shawlands business owners. This project has also been made possible by help and guidance from Gaz Mac from SWG3’s Yardworks Project, his input has been truly invaluable. We have received funding from Glasgow City Council Area Partnership and the Scottish Government Area Resilience Fund, secured by My Shawlands to make this huge project possible.

As the artists begin their work we hope that you all get a chance to see the work in progress, if you have any questions about the project you can get in touch with Lisa McLaughlin at Lisa@myshawlands.com or on 07722388726.  Follow us on social media, instagram.com/myshawlands where you can also find regular updates of the project and the artists involved in creating the Shawlands

SOUTHTEMBER
Thanks to all those who took the pledge and shopped local for September!

NEW SIGNAGE

This summer we installed various 'Welcome to Shawlands' signs throughout the area as a friendly welcome to visitors.   We also installed a further 20 anti litter signs following positive feedback from the residents & businesses from the original batch, let's hope they encourage more litter in the bins instead of on the pavements!

HANGING BASKETS

Back for a second year our hanging baskets have flourished, brightening up the streets of Shawlands.  We use water saving baskets that are planted, watered and maintained for us.

SKIRVING STREET FAIR

As part of the 'playing out' initiative My Shawlands and the businesses of Skirving Street hosted a day of 'good ol' fashioned family fun'  Skirving Street was closed to traffic for a safe environment to let the kids reclaim the street for outdoor play.
